Rare Scarlet Lightning Photographed in Skies

A group of photography enthusiasts based in the island nation have recorded images of “red sprites”, counted as the least common atmospheric displays on Earth, during which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists began their evening to shoot the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on 11 October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.

They thought they would be lucky to get good weather that evening, but their shooting session turned into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer remarked.

“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer said. “It was unbelievable – it resulted in excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, produced by thunderstorms. In contrast to traditional lightning that strikes downward to the surface, red sprites ascend towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that are similar to columns, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a team at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but one photographer had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing right at a sprite when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence looking at the correct area of the sky and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.

Observing the phenomena was a aspiration for the photographer, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you’re seeing an impossible sight, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to witness.”

Advanced and Artistic Mastery

Capturing a such an event needs a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of science and innovative thinking, the photographer stated. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

One of the other individuals commented it was one of the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the starry river shining above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of light danced above a electrical event at a great distance,” he said.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings showing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you know you are seeing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
